Automate Earkeep with Alfred

Last updated: · Reviewed quarterly

Earkeep answers three earkeep:// links: one pauses recording, one resumes it, and one starts a meeting and then saves it. Give each a keyword in Alfred and you can stop the microphone or keep a meeting without ever opening the window. The same links work from Raycast, Apple Shortcuts, Keyboard Maestro or a terminal.

The three links

  • earkeep://pause does what the pause button does: the microphone goes off until you resume. Add ?minutes=30 for a pause that ends on its own, anywhere from 1 minute to 24 hours.
  • earkeep://resume does what the resume button does, and turns the microphone back on.
  • earkeep://toggle does exactly what the meeting shortcut does. The first time, it starts a meeting with what is said next, turning the microphone on if it was off. The second time, it saves that meeting, opens Earkeep so you can name it, and puts the microphone back the way it was.

None of them brings the Earkeep window forward, apart from the second toggle, which opens the meeting it just saved. A pause or resume from a link always posts a notification, so a change to recording is never silent.

If you record on your calendar rather than all day, they follow that mode the way the buttons do. Between meetings, resume starts a recording for the conversation nobody booked, and pause ends it, so capture goes back to waiting for your next meeting.

Set it up in Alfred

This uses an Alfred workflow, which needs the Powerpack. One workflow can hold all three keywords.

  1. Open Alfred's preferences, go to Workflows, and create a Blank Workflow. Call it Earkeep.
  2. Add Inputs → Keyword. Set the keyword to pause, choose No Argument, and give it a title such as Pause recording.
  3. Add Actions → Run Script, set the language to /bin/zsh, and paste the line below. Connect the keyword to it.
shell
open -g "earkeep://pause"

The -g asks macOS to leave Earkeep in the background, so Alfred closes and you are back where you were. Repeat the two steps for the other keywords:

shell
open -g "earkeep://resume"
open -g "earkeep://toggle"
open -g "earkeep://pause?minutes=30"

Prefer one key to a keyword? Add Triggers → Hotkey in the same workflow and connect it to the script instead. For starting and saving meetings you may not need Alfred at all: the meeting shortcut, ⌃⌥⌘M by default, does the same thing from any app. You can change it in Settings → General.

Other launchers

  • Raycast: create a Quicklink for each link, with the earkeep:// address as its link.
  • Apple Shortcuts: use an Open URLs action with the link. That makes it available from Siri, the menu bar and a keyboard shortcut set in Shortcuts.
  • Keyboard Maestro, a shell script, cron: run the same open -g line.

And without any of them, Earkeep's menu bar icon has the same two controls. Pause recording opens the same choices as the window, from fifteen minutes to until you resume, and reads Resume recording once you have paused. Beside it is Start a meeting, which reads Save the meeting while one is under way.

If something goes wrong

Nothing happens. Check the link from a terminal with open "earkeep://pause". If macOS says no application is set to open it, Earkeep has not been opened since it was installed; open it once, and macOS learns the link.

Resume does nothing, and a notification says "Not recording". A meeting on your calendar is marked never-record and is under way. A link never overrides that: turn it off on the meeting in Earkeep if you do want it recorded.

The browser asks whether to open Earkeep. That is a web page using a link, not Alfred. You can say no; launchers like Alfred never ask.

Frequently asked questions

Can a website pause or start my recording?

A web page can open an earkeep:// link like any other, and the browser asks you first. Even when you allow it, every pause or resume from a link posts a notification, and no link can record a meeting you marked never-record.

Does pausing from a link work like the pause button?

Yes. The microphone is released, so your Mac's recording indicator goes dark, and nothing is transcribed until you resume or the pause runs out.

Do I need the Alfred Powerpack?

For workflows, yes. Raycast Quicklinks and Apple Shortcuts do the same thing for free.

Does Earkeep have to be running?

No. If it isn't, macOS opens it first. Pause and resume then apply straight away.
